California’s Wildfire Environment and the Future of Aerial Fire Intelligence

California has become one of the most operationally complex wildfire environments in the world.


Over the past two decades, the scale, intensity and frequency of California wildfires have transformed not only how fires are fought, but also how agencies think about intelligence, aviation and operational coordination.

As these regions face increasingly complex fire environments, California’s operational evolution offers important lessons regarding:

The Future of Aerial Fire Intelligence

The next phase of wildfire aviation is unlikely to be defined solely by larger aircraft or increased suppression capability.

As Harald Howenthal, Chief of US Operations at Airview Fire Recon, explains:

“California has demonstrated that wildfire aviation is no longer just about suppression capability. Increasingly, the operational advantage comes from how quickly aerial intelligence can support situational awareness and decision-making during fast-moving incidents.”

That evolution is now influencing wildfire strategy internationally.
