Australia Bushfire Season 2026 Forecast: El Niño Signals Elevated Bushfire Risk Across the Nation

Australia's bushfire season 2026 is shaping as one of the most concerning in recent years, with climate experts warning that a strengthening El Niño, combined with a developing positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), is creating the conditions for an earlier, hotter and potentially longer fire season.


The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has officially confirmed that El Niño is now active, while global climate models suggest the event could strengthen into one of the most powerful "Super El Niño" systems recorded since 1950.

For emergency management agencies, utilities, aviation operators and regional communities, the Australian bushfire forecast points towards significantly increased fire danger across much of the country.


Australian Bushfire Forecast Points to Dangerous Fire Conditions


Long-range climate modelling indicates Australia is likely to experience well above-average temperatures throughout spring and summer.


Current forecasts show an 80% probability that maximum temperatures will fall within the hottest 20% of historical records across major population centres including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.

At the same time, rainfall is expected to remain well below average across southern and eastern Australia.

Persistent high-pressure systems are forecast to suppress winter and spring rainfall from July through September, accelerating the drying of forests, grasslands and agricultural land before the traditional fire season has even begun.


These conditions substantially increase the likelihood of rapid fire ignition, faster fire spread and more extreme bushfire behaviour.


Why El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole Matter


While El Niño is well known for producing hotter and drier conditions across Australia, meteorologists are also monitoring the development of a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD).


Historically, when a strong El Niño coincides with a positive IOD, Australia experiences one of the most dangerous combinations for bushfire activity.


The two climate systems effectively reduce moisture flowing across the continent, limiting rainfall while allowing vegetation to dry rapidly. Fire authorities often describe this combination as creating "tinderbox" conditions capable of supporting fast-moving and difficult-to-control bushfires.


Earlier Start, Longer Fire Season


Climate scientists believe Australia's bushfire season could begin earlier than usual and remain active for longer than historical averages.


Earlier fuel drying, combined with extended heatwaves, lower humidity and stronger fire weather, may place sustained pressure on emergency services across multiple states throughout spring and summer.


For fire agencies, maintaining situational awareness over an extended operational period will become increasingly important.

While no seasonal outlook can predict exactly where or when major bushfires will occur, the current climate indicators clearly point toward an elevated level of bushfire risk.


Communities, land managers, utilities and emergency agencies should use the coming months to review preparedness plans, undertake hazard reduction where appropriate and ensure response capabilities are ready for what may become a demanding fire season.


With hotter conditions, reduced rainfall and multiple climate drivers aligning simultaneously, Australia's 2026 bushfire season has the potential to test emergency management capabilities across the nation.


Preparation, early detection and real-time operational intelligence will remain among the most effective tools available to reduce the impact of bushfires and protect lives, property and the environment.
